What We Do

The Centre aims to give refugees and asylum seekers the skills they need to build a new life and to flourish. While our focus in on learning the English language, our primary goal is to create a welcoming and hospitable community where people can build their confidence and develop all their gifts and talents. Alongside a staff team of 5 we have up to thirty volunteers at any one time, with many volunteer-led activities such as gardening and art.

ICT Suite

English Classes

We are working with Cross Street Baptist Church to install a new ICT Suite for our clients and volunteers to use.

One of the biggest barriers faced by many refugees is communication. If they lack the ability to speak English they may find themselves excluded from many aspects of life. Practical Help

Creative Arts

We help Centre users deal with a range of everyday problems such as making medical appointments, understanding letters and contacting solicitors. We also offer a hot meal every Monday, run a clothes store and, for those who need it most, prepare weekly food parcels.

The Centre runs a range of other creative workshops that give people a chance to participate and to learn English in different ways. This year we offered courses in mural painting, drama and photography.

Networks and Partnerships

Working together with others who share our aims is crucial to the success of the Centre. This year we have been grateful to Streetwise Language Live for running our drama classes, Islington Adult Community Learning department who provided a photography tutor, Catherine Walsh who taught art as a volunteer, the Holloway Seventh Day Adventist Church community outreach team who cooked the hot meals and the Jewish Community Centre who made donations to our clothes store, to name but a few...
